Ted Basciano (Solo Exhibition)

October 14, 2016 - November 19, 2016

Opening Reception: October 14, 2016, 7:00 pm-10:00 pm

This exhibition is exciting for me because in the last 30 years as an artist I have never had a show of drawings. Approximately 40 water colour pencil drawings were created at the Suncheon Namdo Guesthouse in South Korea while I lived and worked there between 2013 and 2015. Twenty-one of the works will be on display for the first time.

I made simple sketches for my mosaic work while living in Naju. Then I moved to Suncheon and the drawings became more colourful. I had more ideas too. I was quite interested in my surroundings. In my works on can see the living room, kitchen and the front of the house where I stayed. Suncheon’s most famous bird, the hooded crane appears, as well as other local animals; the white napped crane, egrets, a Jindo dog, mudskippers, a cat and a rat. Prominent Korean cultural elements are shown, such as, rice cakes, tangerines, a mall eating table, green tea, a fan dancer, a bamboo basket, mountains and rice fields.

My drawings focus on whimsical elements, charming couples, doodled faces, colourful still life, emotional moments, landscapes and animals. The subject matter is all over the place but is generally happy or funny. I focus much on beauty, freedom and play. As for style, one can see that many of the works have something in them that looks realistic sharing space with something that is imaginary”.
