Learn the basics of writing engaging dialogue, memorable characters, and conflicts, suited to both the stage and screen. Tackle the basic building blocks of writing dramatic and powerful scenes and stories through a series of writing exercises. The focus of this course is to promote and develop in students the tools and techniques for writing a dramatic play. Students will participate in a variety of writing exercises to develop an awareness of character, action, and plot and will learn how these elements contribute to storytelling. Students will also read scenes from Canadian plays and be expected to participate in dramatic readings of these works as well as their own work in class. Throughout the course, students will participate in creative activities to develop confidence in their own writing voice and will monitor and reflect upon the craft of writing. The course will culminate in the students writing a first draft of an original ten-minute play (7 – 10 pages).
