Embark on a unique opportunity to explore and learn with the modern masters of Realist Art. Through a supportive and dynamic classroom atmosphere, learn how to bring your art experience to another level. Gain knowledge of painting, drawing, and printmaking through stimulating advice from professional artists at the highest level in their field. Located just an hour from Toronto, workshops will be conducted on fabulous natural and historical sites throughout Hamilton and the Niagara escarpment, as well as the most professionally equipped facilities including the Hamilton Conservatory for the Arts, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, and The Print Studio.

Core Idea: There are many recreational art workshops offered annually by many different art institutions across Canada. The unique nature of this program is that it is based on teaching not only the techniques but also the heritage of Realist Art. It is only through training and knowledge of the past, that artists can produce the masterpieces of tomorrow. The most valuable and inspiring part of this course is the chance for the student to be among some of the most experienced and accomplished artists. They will bring a wealth of creative life experience to the classroom, and a wealth of knowledge and skill to their instruction.A chance to find out firsthand what it takes to be a successful artist.

rm1Alexander Dzyubko-Doyle
Impressionist oil painting

Alexander Dzyubko- Doyle was born in Russia near the city of Rostov to a family of artists. Currently living in Toronto, he has been creating his artworks and teaching since 1991. Dzyubko- Doyle graduated from the St. Petersburg Academy of Art and is a well known specialist in the schools and techniques of the Old Masters as well as Impressionism. He studied at the schools of Rembrandt and Rubens and lived in the Netherlands and Belgium. He is also the devoted follower of his great predecessor, the famous Russian artist Alexander Ivanov. Since 1991 he has taught his students with great passion and devotion. He is the founder of the HCA School of Classical Realism at the Hamilton Conservatory for the Arts and is a strong supporter of classical education in the fine arts. Alexander is a well established internationally represented Artistand has won several prizes in art shows and juried competitions. His works are exhibited in Russia, Germany, the Netherlands, Canada and the USA. His art works have been acquired by public organizations, art galleries, and private collections.

This course is ideal for either beginner or advanced artists. It offers students the opportunity to learn the theory of colour vision and colour interaction. Alexander believes that working “en plein air” helps students rapidly develop a sense of colour and light in their paintings. The harmony of colours and the use of contrasting colours to create the mood will be studied. The workshop will be conducted both in-studio and on location, where students will learn the influence of fleeting light, subtle mixing of color and be a part of the great beauty of the Niagara region and its many spectacular historical sites.

Reductive drawing

Bruno Capolongo is an established Canadian Artist of Neapolitan descent. He studied Fine Art in Italy and the  USA. His work is collected by private and corporate collectors alike, and he's been in well over 120 exhibitions, including 20 solo shows. Exhibiting primarily in Canada and the United States, he's also shown in Japan and has been represented by a number of fine art establishments, including galleries in Toronto, New York City, Montreal, and Washington DC. Capolongo is the winner of many international prizes and juried awards and honors, including winning the internationally coveted Elizabeth Greenshield grant three times (one of only three dozen triple recipients since 1955), and receiving consecutive first place awards at the national Canadian exhibition and competition Evidence of Things Unseen. The course is based on drawing beyond the line. This course will see students draw in various dry media in a manner that renders painterly rather than line driven effects. Employing the Reductive Drawing methods, students will draw in a classical life-like manner on location at the Art Gallery of Hamilton and in the studio.

 E. Robert Ross is a Canadian artist. Born in Hamilton and raised in Burlington, Ross began painting seriously shortly after graduating from high school. Influenced by the Canadian artists, the Group of Seven, Robert Ross preferred his own realistic style to an  impressionistic approach. He was also greatly influenced by the photographic Art work of Ansel Adams and Sierra Club photographers. Ross’s highly detailed acrylic paintings have won him numerous awards and have been included in several prestigious shows. His works were exhibited in many national and international exhibitions. His paintings are included in many public, private and corporate collections. Since 1997 Robert Ross has had several successful shows at the Becket Gallery and Burlington Art centre as well as the Art Gallery of Hamilton. Besides being a successful artist, Robert Ross has been known as a passionate teacher. He has taught numerous workshops for the Burlington Art Centre and other institutions. This course will examine the process of producing an acrylic painting from preparatory materials and sketches, layouts, and the use of paints in the final product. Learn as the instructor reveals the inner secrets of acrylic landscape painting in a step by step process, designed to capture the inner mood of the image and produce a sophisticated work of art. Individual expression is encouraged and will be a strong focus of this course.

Print-making explorations

Cuban born Canadian artist Julio Ferrer was born in Cienfuegos, Cuba. Julio currently resides in and creates from his studio in Hamilton, Ontario. Julio graduated from the Elementary School of Visual Arts “Rolando Escardo,” in Cienfuegos Cuba. In 1988 he was admitted to study Fine Art in the most prestigious art university in Havana, the National School of Fine Arts where he studied painting and drawing for four years. Beside his regular academic subjects he has a great interest in exploring a variety of mediums in the visual arts. He attended classes in print-making, graphic design fundamentals, mixed media and many others, after which he became a master printer. After graduating with a diploma in fine arts he devoted himself to his artistic career. He participated in many regional, national and international art exhibitions. Julio took part in several art competitions and won many awards. Julio Ferrer won eighteen Cuban National Honors and two prizes in international art competitions. In 2006 he was named as an Artist of the Year in Cuba. Since his immigration to Canada Julio Ferrer has established himself as an extraordinarily talented artist and fine print-maker. He has participated in more than eighty group exhibitions and eighteen solo shows. Julio is well-known as a passionate art teacher and creates an excellent studio atmosphere in all his classes. He teaches his print-making techniques at The Print Studio in downtown Hamilton. Here is the opportunity to take sometime to explore the technique of Monotype. This media is commonly known as the painterly print for its dual character, incorporating during the process both painting and print-making concepts. Each class will cover a different approach to monotypes. Due to the nature of this kind of program students will be able to create a minimum of one work per day.
