The Hamilton Conservatory for the Arts invites you and your class to enjoy an integrated exploration of the arts for a full day field trip. We offer observational and hands-on learning for grades K-8.
Students interested in attending a field trip at the Hamilton Conservatory for the Arts will begin the day’s program in our thematically decorated Recital Hall. The Hall is equipped with lighting, props and scenery designed to transport the students into the mood and time of the chosen theme. Every child will be dressed in appropriate costumes, which will blend in to the existing scenery in respect to the era and style of the particular theme. A quick “synopsis” of the story is told after which the group of students breaks into Group A and Group B.
Group B leaves the Recital Hall to work on a visual arts project. They will work on creating additional props, enhancing and creating certain areas of the scenery or costumes or other creative arts projects such as paintings, drawings, or sculptures. Group A remains in the Recital Hall, where they work on the telling of the story through drama, dance and music. The children will have the opportunity to work with different musical instruments such as xylophones, metallophones, tambourines, cymbals, drums, maracas, bell trees, glockenspiels, etc., dress up in costumes, and experience the development of the story for the chosen theme through movement and dance.
At the end of the morning, Group B will return to the Recital hall, display their art works, and become the audience as Group A presents the dramatization (through action, songs and dance) of the story. There is a lunch break and then the two groups switch over parts for the remainder of the afternoon. This very unique and extraordinary approach of children performing for children will inspire them to create their own magic and make the arts “come alive”. The students learn about history, geography, different cultures and nature through hands on artistic experiences.
They also learn to understand that although each art is unique in many ways, there are similarities among them – for example, rhythm is an aspect of each of them. – Ontario Arts Curriculum
